Illumination Mine M49A1
The M49A1 signal mine is designed to warn troops of enemy presence and to illuminate a defense sector at night. It is mounted on a tree or a stake. It uses a tension cord. When the M2 detonator pin is pulled out, an internal ejection charge propels a signal flare (a parachute-deployed flare or a stationary torch) into the air, which burns brightly with a white-yellow flame (luminous flux up to 50,000 candelas) for 55–70 seconds, completely exposing the enemy infantry.
